Argentina

Wine has been grown principally in the area west of the Andes Mountains since the 1500’s. 80% of wine production comes from the region of Mendoza with an impressive array of varietals and blends. With a large domestic market, the majority of the wine produced is consumed locally with wine consumption on the order of 30 liters per capital. Argentina has become one of the world’s premier wine producers and I have found kosher wines exported from both Argentina to be an excellent value. Argentina is now the fifth largest producer of wine in the world.

Byblos

Byblos is produced at an all kosher winery called Pribokaar at an altitude of about 900 meters. It is located in Mendoza in an Appellation regarded by many as Argentina’s best wine region. The wines are estate grown and bottled. They are harvested by hand from mature vines in low yield vineyards to insure quality. They use the Bonarda grape, an Italian grape varietal that was transported

Don Alfonso

When Don Alfonso ruled Spain in the 14 century, he realized that the prosperity of Spain depended on bringing people of disparate background together. He called its vineyards “the paradise of heaven” and proclaimed “its castles were gladdened by its good wines.” The vineyards in Chile from where these wines come are said to have been settled by Don Alfonso’s descendants. Winemaker Héctor Saldivia has produced this wine as a testament to this great king. Saldivia obtained his Agronomy degree at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and later specialized in Oenology. In 1995 he became a member of the Agronomist Oenologist Engineers Association of Chile. His professional career began in the viticulture field developing important projects foremerging wine industry sectors. He later became the wine cellar manager for a boutique vineyard.

Layla VineyardsLocated at the foot of the Andes Mountains the grapes come from vineyards with mature vines that are least 30 years old. Night harvesting in small baskets insures that only whole

Marumatok

This producer has been a pioneer regarding premier quality wine production in Argentina. As a result, Marumatok S.A. became recognized for its brands “Valero Especial” y “Tekiah”. From 2007 they began to produce in their own winery, located in San Martin, province of Mendoza, under the supervision of the Orthodox Union. The winery is one of the few that are fully devoted to kosher wine production.

Tierre Salvaje

Tierre Salvaje in Argentina is located in Mendoza Valley, in the interior of the Maule Valley.

Valero

Valero is located in the Mendoza winemaking region of Argentina.

Beckett’s Flat is a boutique premium winery established in 1992 on a 35 acre site situated in Australia’s foremost and celebrated estate wine region, Margaret River in Western Australia. It is considered the wine region most like both Napa and Bordeaux in its climate and gravely loam soil characteristics. This small wine growing region provides warmer nights, cooler days, and higher humidity than inland areas. It is only responsible for about 10% of Australian wine production but is the premier appellation in Australia.

I had the pleasure to visit this Single Vineyard Estate winery in early 2009. Bill and Noni Ilic operate a first class vineyard, with a passion for excellence and are hands on in all respects. There are about
20,000 vines and modern winery with visitor’s center. It is about a three and a half hour ride from Perth so if you go, please be sure to call in advance.

They even have limited guest house accommodation in a charming one bedroom vineyard cottage. All their kosher wines are Mevushal. Their new Five Stones label is inspired by the biblical story of David and Goliath: “Then he took his staff in his hand chose five smooth stones from the brook, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and with his sling in his hand, approached the philistine”….They are progressive in the use of advanced Stevlin closures to replace the use of corks.

Harkham Windarra

Joseph River √√

Produced at the Harvey Fresh Winery where the beautiful Darling Ranges incorporate altitude and undulating landscape. It provides for fruit of exceptional character. Their line of kosher wines is a selective range of full flavored, elegant wines. They have seen an enormous growth in viticulture, over the past five years, which led to the development of their winery built and established in November 1999, ready for their first vintage in March 2000. The winery draws its wine grapes from Growers within the Geographic region of the South West of Western Australia. This region stems from North of Harvey down to Busselton including areas such as Donnybrook, Capel and the Ferguson Valley.

Koolabara Hills √√

Located in Western Australia, they enjoy a classic climate of warm
sunny days and cool evenings, with soil structures that are ideal for
grape growing.
Teal Lake √√√

When wine production began in Australia during the early 1800’s, the wines produced were rich and sweet, typical of a warm climate, and for the most part just used locally. However, using modern technology Australia began to produce popular wines that rivaled the wines in the west. Teal Lake has become one of the most sought-after kosher labels from Australia with a high value range of wines produced in the Southeastern Australia winemaking district of Swan Hill/Murray River. The winery that produces this label is a superior producer located about four hours drive north of Melbourne in an area originally famous for its gold mining heritage. All their kosher wines are Mevushal. Water is a very limited and precious commodity here.. Drip irrigation is essential to the production of high quality wine grapes.

Austria

Austrian wine exports are at an all time high even though most of
the wine production is consumed in Austria. With four major growing
regions they grow many varietals and seem to specialize in sweet wines.

Hafner
This family owned winery in the village of Moenchlof is not far from the Hungarian border. It was founded in 1970’s and specializes in white wines and sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Zweigelt and Gruner Veltliner grapes.
Canada

Chile

Chile enjoys a combination of ideal conditions, skilled winemakers and investment so it produces excellent wines from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and
Riesling varietals. Chile has been producing wine wince the mid 16th century and has recently emerged as producer of great kosher wines of low cost and excellent value.

Alfasi √√√

Alfasi wines are indeed superior products at low cost making them an exceptional value. Made of grapes from the Maule Valley just south of Santiago, Chile’s capital city, Alfasi wines benefit from an almost ideal
paring of sunny climates and cool ocean breezes. The surrounding mountain ranges provide a cool, moisture-free climate.

Don Alfonzo

The Viñedo Chadwick vineyard is located in Puente Alto, on the south-east border of Santiago, the capital of Chile, along the Northern bank of the Maipo River in the foothills of the Andes Mountains.

Lanzur

The Mediterranean-like climate in the Maule Valley makes it an ideal wine growing region.

Layla

This is Chile’s oldest family estate vineyards and winery. It is situated in the Lontué/Curicó/Maule Valley Appellation.

Cyprus
The Talmud references Yayin Kafrisin (wine from Cyprus) as one of the ingredients in the spice mixtures used in the Temple. With an ancient history is all the more appropriate that kosher wine is available from this area.

Lambouri Winery √√

My Rating: Superior
Located in the village of Kato with vineyards on the Trodos mountains, this family owned winery began producing superior kosher wine since 2007.

France
Herzog Selection

These wines are the life work of Pierre Miodownick, an accomplished winemaker with an eye for great wine and new markets. With fanatic attention to detail, quality, and grapes, Pierre has worked to bring wines from all the great vineyards in France to consumers. Pierre considers it his goal to familiarize American consumers with the great wines of France while demonstrating the quality and craft that continues to define the production of French wines.

Georgia

Georgia is home to the some of the oldest wine-making tradition in the world. Vineyards in the Kakheti province have produced Georgia’s strong and fruity wines for thousands of years. Georgia is also home to a Jewish community with roots stretching back well over 2,000 years. But it was only during the 2007 grape harvest at the Alaverdi winery that these two ancient parts of Georgia’s culture came together.

Carmel Winery √√√√

The Carmel wineries were established in 1882 with headquarters in Zichron Yaakov, sometimes referred to as the “Gallo” of Israeli wines, it is Israel’s leading producer of wines and spirits, maintaining a careful
balance between the traditional art of winemaking and the use of the latest technology. Once known more for their kashrus (kosher status) than their quality, they have made enormous strides in recent years, to
lose their perception as a producer of mediocre wines and have now emerged as a premier and even world class winery. Carmel processes about 70% of all the wine grapes produced in Israel
in four wineries from 300 vineyards from all over the land of Israel. These include: Kayoumi 1near Mount Meron, Zarit in the Kedesh Valley of the Upper Galil, Sha’al in the Goalan Heights, and Ramat Arad in the
North east Negev.

Carmel’s Zichron Ya’acov Wine Cellars, built in 1892, is the largest winery in Israel. On the premises, is a modern, state-of-the-art facility making small quantities of quality wines, including the “Single Vineyard” series wines from Carmel’s finest vineyards. The most advanced, modern winemaking technology blends in with the historic 120 year old cellars. The name of the winery is in memory of Edmond de Rothschild’s
father, Baron James Jacob (Ya’acov) de Rothschild, who purchased the famous Bordeaux winery, Château Lafite, for the Rothschild family. Zichron Ya’acov is a charming town which still has an atmosphere of pre-state Israel. It is situated south of Haifa on the southern slopes of Mount Carmel, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Zichron Ya’acov added a state of the art facility in 2003 which produced the “Single Vineyard” series wines. It was through the investment born of a passion for wine and the country of Israel by the famous Rothschild family, in particular Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who was the youngest son of James de Rothschild. Its trademark is a huge cluster of grapes carried on a staff
between the shoulders of two men (see Wine Wisdom).

Domaine du Castel is a small world class winery in the Judean Hills (Haute-Judee) about ten miles west of Jerusalem. That is earning very special attention. It is dedicated to things like harvesting by hand and
scrupulous attention to every detail. The wines are unfiltered and unfined. They are consistently among the finest wines available anywhere at any price.

After being born in cosmopolitan Alexandria and educated in England, Italy and Switzerland, Eli Acken moved to Israel, first working in agriculture and then later in the restaurant business with a the family restaurant called Mama Mia in Jerusalem. Eli has no formal winemaking education, and so when he had to decide whether or not to turn Domaine du Castel from a hobby into a formal business he was faced with a formidable challenge. Eli recalls how a sentiment voiced by Winston Churchill was very apt at this time as he felt as though he “were walking with Destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial … I was sure I should not fail” (Winston Churchill, May 1940).

-------------- Italy

Italy is the largest wine-producing country in the world, producing about 30% of the world’s wine. Italian wine is made to go with food. Most of it is consumed with the local food and is a regular part of the diet.
There are many distinct regions and styles. The two most important to kosher wine are Asti in the Piedmont region and Chianti in the Tuscany region. It is also the source of the now very popular Pinot Grigio.
Tuscany
Located in central Italy, this area has been producing Chianti and
Montepulchiano (MON-teh-puhl-chi-ano) for centuries. They are made mostly from the Sangiovese grape. Asti (AH-stee)
This is the home of Moscato D’Asti / Asti -Spumante (spoo-MAHNTay) There are many kosher varieties of these light, sweet, effervescent, refreshing party wines available from the Asti region of Italy.

Bartenura

Named for a 15th century philosopher, and currently one of the hottest kosher brands from Italy, Bartenura wines have been recently repackaged in beautifully-designed bottles. These premium Italian
wines will offer you a unique insight into the marvelous wine traditions of Italy. With a broad range of outstanding varietals, Bartenura is a firm presence on the Italian wine market.

The vineyards used in the Middle Ages by Rashi have served as models for today’s Rashi wine vineyards located in the winemaking heartlands of Italy and New York State.

In 1985, the Herzog family decided to expand their winemaking operations to California, where they make wine under two separate labels:
Baron Herzog and Herzog Wine Cellars. After twenty years of renting space in various wineries, the family was finally able to build its own 70,000 square foot state-of-the-art winery just south of Santa Barbara, in the town of Oxnard. They have opened a superior visitor’s center with an elevated view if the winery floor and an OU kosher restaurant called Tierra Sur. The high point of the menu for me is a prix fix, wine taster’s meal with pairings for each course.

Hagafen Cellars is located in the Napa Valley, in the heart of California’s premier wine grape region. Less than a mile south of the famed Stags leap District and twenty yards from the Oak Knoll District--Napa’s newest and most exciting of American Viticultural Areas--the well-drained soil is ideal for the growth and production of ripe and rich, intensely fruity small lot estate bottled wines. Owned and operated by Irit and Ernie Weir, the winery was founded in 1979, and the first commercially released vintage was harvested in 1980. In the ensuing years, Hagafen has grown from a small partnership producing wine with grapes from Winery Lake Vineyard, then owned by Rene DiRosa, to a well-established wine company whose wines are distributed throughout North America and overseas. Since 1980 Hagafen wines have been served on numerous occasions at the White House to visiting foreign dignitaries.

Ernie’s daily involvement in the two sides of wine production, grape growing and winemaking, ensures the superb quality of the wines. “Fine wine starts in the vineyard with careful vineyard management,” says Weir. “I strive to take maximum advantage of the Napa Valley’s natural geology and climate to produce the best wine varietals. I interfere as little as possible with the soil, creating a balance that minimizes the chemical and erosion impact by using modern farming techniques while maintaining the age-old wisdom of balance and the traditional values of conservation and land stewardship. Once harvest is completed, I undertake the second part of my job, winemaking. This presents an interesting challenge every time since each year the growing season and harvest are unique and different. I never seek to change what Nature has provided.
“My goal is to showcase the best that our land has produced.”
All wines are mevushal and stand as a shining example of the world class quality that is available today.
